Packing Essentials for the Hackney Half

Running

Your Race Day Survival Guide

The Hackney Half is just around the corner, and with race day excitement building, it’s easy to get caught up in the buzz. But before you lace up your trainers and hit the streets of Hackney, taking the time to pack your essentials thoughtfully can make all the difference to your race experience.

Kit Layout

You’ve probably seen the classic kit layout photos flooding social feeds the day before a race – shoes, bib, gels, sunglasses, all neatly arranged. They’re not just for show; laying out your kit is a great way to check you’ve got your essentials. It helps you avoid that last-minute scramble. Avoid being tempted trying anything new for the first time!

Travel

Hackney is vibrant but busy on race day. Bike parking fills up quickly, and public transport – especially the tube – can get packed. Double and triple check the most convenient way to get to the location, to make sure you get to the start line relaxed and on time, ready to focus on your run.

Hydration

Hackney often brings hot, sunny weather – so hydration is key. Check the route and the hydration stations. Make sure you spend the day before staying hydrated and out the sun as much as possible. On the day, consume water but also electrolytes to stay replenished and prevent any injuries.

Nutrition

Race day isn’t the time to try anything new. Your body will take it on better, and you will prevent risking any discomfort. This applies to solid food the day before, breakfast, gels used during the race and the all-important recovery fuel post-race.

Sun protection

Running in bright conditions can cause you to squint – creating tension in your face, affecting your focus, and potentially causing headaches. Sunglasses help keep your vision clear and your concentration sharp – plus, they look great.

Plan a meeting point

It's going to be crowded - if you’ve got friends or family supporting you, agree on a meeting point in advance for the all-important celebrations. It is also really handy if they pre-plan where they’ll be cheering – and which side – so you can spot them mid-race for that quick hug.

With these packing essentials in mind, you’ll head into the Hackney Half fully prepared. Good luck – and enjoy every mile.
